The main objective of the group is the development and application of advanced analytical methodologies to solve complex problems related to the agri-food, biomedical and pharmaceutical industries.
The research of the Bioanalysis group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Barcelona is mainly focused on the development and application of high resolution separation techniques based on mass spectrometry to solve complex analytical problems related to organic sciences (directed or undirected) applied to biomedicine, the pharmaceutical industry, and the agri-food industry. The group is particularly interested in the improvement of sample pretractament, separation, characterization, sensitivity and reproducibility in the analysis of peptides, proteins, glycoproteins, protein oligomers, metabolites, microRNAs and other microRNAs, microRNAs and other bioactive elements and compounds in biological samples, biopharmaceuticals, foods and their residues using LC-MS, CE-MS and related techniques, as well as in the interpretation of the data generated using chemometric multivariate data analysis tools. These analyses have a great applicability in the quality control of food and its contaminants, the authentication and prevention of fraud, the development of functional foods and nutraceuticals, the evaluation of the effects of food components on health, and the detailed characterization of waste from the agri-food industry for its valorization.

Fernando Benavente graduated in Chemical Sciences in 1997, completed an experimental Master in Analytical Chemistry in 1998 and obtained his PhD degree in Chemical Sciences in 2003 at the University of Barcelona. Since 2021 he is Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Chemistry of the UB. He has been a member of this group since 1997, but has also carried out doctoral and postdoctoral research stays at The RW Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute (Raritan, New Jersey, USA), the National University of Rosario (Rosario, Argentina), the University of Leiden (Leiden, The Netherlands), the National University of La Plata (La Plata, Argentina) and the University of Ottawa (Ottawa, Canada). She also belongs to the Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety of the UB (INSA-UB) and to the teaching innovation group recognized by the UB ‘Analytical Chemistry in Experimental Sciences and Health Sciences’. His research contributions include more than 120 publications, most of them in journals indexed in the first quartile of his areas of expertise, several book chapters and more than 200 presentations at national and international conferences. In 2014 The Analytical Scientist magazine included him in its ‘top 40 under 40’. He is currently a member of the board of the Spanish Society of Analytical Chemistry (SEQA) and editor of the journals Foods (MDPI, Q1) and Actualidad Analítica (SEQA).
