Innovation and improvement of bacterial culture media

Our research group collaborates with the company Reactivos para Diagnóstico, SL, which manufactures microbiological culture media. In collaboration with this company, two industrial doctorates have been carried out: “Innovation in the detection of Legionella and in the cultivation of demanding bacteria” and “Innovation in modular technology for the mass sowing of microbiological culture media” and 6 scientific articles have been published.

Innovación en la detección de Legionella y en el cultivo de bacterias exigentes

In this thesis, the properties of the GVPC medium for the isolation of Legionella spp. in water samples were improved by modifying the sterilisation conditions and the elimination of oxygen during manufacture.

The best membrane filter for the detection of Legionella in water samples was also identified.

A chromogenic medium for Legionella was developed, based on two chromogens containing short and long chain fatty acids.

The chocolate agar medium was modified with the addition of a preparation of bovine blood powder, commonly used for veterinary use. The crushed and irradiated product resulted in an alternative medium to chocolate agar, with a higher content of non-lysed erythrocytes.
