The aim of our research group is to develop high quality and prestigious applied research in the field of immunonutrition.
Could the diet or bioactive components of food enhance the defenses? Can diet help to mature the immune system? In case of inflammatory or immune disorders or diseases, can diet help in prevention or treatment? How good is the Mediterranean diet, rich in antioxidants and fiber, or breast milk in these effects? In our research group we try to answer these questions.

Margarida Castell holds a PhD in Pharmacy and is Professor of Physiology of the Physiology Section of the Department of Biochemistry and Physiology of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences. Her research career has focused on the function of the immune system in health and disease. Since the early 2000s, her interest has been focused on the interaction between certain food components and the immune system. Among other things, during her career she has established the role of different compounds on immunity in situations of immaturity (early stages of life), deficiency (strenuous physical exercise) or disease (allergy, acute or chronic inflammation, etc).
